We take a value chain approach to recycling. This means working on everything from consumer awareness, and collection and sorting infrastructure, through to expanding market opportunities for recycled materials. Partnership and collaboration with stakeholders is critical to building sustainable recycling value chains.
We support packaging recovery organisations, multi-stakeholder alliances and initiatives, beverage carton associations and recycling solutions, working with them on product, equipment and technology development, with the aim of expanding collection of recyclable packaging. This is an important part of our efforts to increase recycling rates in all the markets where our business operates.
We actively collaborate with companies that recycle used beverage cartons, ranging from small family-owned enterprises to multinational companies. Beverage cartons are currently being recycled in more than 70 countries worldwide with a range of collection and recycling solutions reflecting the maturity of the individual market. Since 2010, we have increased the number of facilities that recycle beverage cartons that we work with from 40 to more than 170. The map shows the breadth and variety of the many businesses recycling the materials of post-consumer cartons.
We are also members of various associations and industry initiatives that promote and drive packaging recycling and circularity. We are often involved as founders and board members, helping set and deliver the strategy. Here are some examples:
The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) is an organisation that brings consumer goods retailers and manufacturers together globally to secure consumer trust and drive positive change, including greater efficiency. Within CGF we actively contribute to the Plastic Waste Coalition of Action that aims to align on principles and practices for packaging recyclability, collection schemes and recycling technologies;
3RI: The 3R Initiative, is a platform to catalyse zero plastic waste leadership. This initiative is developing a market-based approach that will scale up recovery and recycling activities and increase accountability for plastic waste around the world. The 3RI's flexible mechanism, underpinned by robust standards, will transparently and sustainably increase the value of plastic waste and beverage carton waste, and incentivize new activities that support the circular economy. We aim to ensure transparency, accountability and efficiency in the transition to a circular economy, by leveraging our collective experience, expertise, and innovation to provide solutions by tackling waste globally. We, as members of 3RI, have committed to jointly develop, test and implement three effective mechanisms to help close the loop for waste.
TSC: The Sustainability Consortium is a global organization transforming the consumer goods industry to deliver more sustainable consumer products, which offers tools and services to help companies address product sustainability in their supply chain.
ACE: The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment provides a European platform for Tetra Pak (and other major beverage carton manufacturers) and their paperboard suppliers to benchmark and profile cartons as renewable, recyclable and low-carbon packaging solutions. The association engages with stakeholders and partners and contributes expertise to EU policy, legislation and standard-setting.
EXTR:ACT In 2018, we cofounded the EXTR:ACT platform to foster recycling of beverage cartons, including the non-paper components, such as polymers and aluminium. This new platform will help the beverage industry take additional measures to increase recycling of its packages, scale and drive value for recycling solutions and secure their long-term sustainability.
4evergreen: Created as a forum to engage and connect industry members, to make synergy and boost the contribution of fibre-based packaging in a circular and sustainable economy that minimizes climate and environmental impact. The main objectives are to increase awareness about the benefits of fibre-based packaging materials, advocate for EU legislation supporting product design for recyclability and call for the development of collection systems and appropriate recycling infrastructures.
CEFLEX: This collaborative initiative is a European consortium of companies and associations representing the entire value chain of flexible packaging. Their mission is to make flexible packaging more relevant to the circular economy by collaborating to create better system design solutions.
Carton Council (USA): The Carton Council is an industry organisation committed to grow carton recycling in the US. By promoting both recycling technology and local collection programmes, as well as growing awareness that cartons are recyclable, the association works to reduce cartons going to waste.
Carton Recycling Professional Committee (China): The Professional Committee was formed in May 2018 following China’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) issued in January 2017, which stipulates targets for the implementation of EPR for carton packaging. Affiliated to China’s Resource Recycling Association, the Professional Committee aims to facilitate the joint efforts of industry stakeholders to deliver the target set by the government and therefore improve the management of used beverage cartons in China.
Action Alliance for Recycling Beverage Cartons (AARC) (India): This initiative exists to strengthen the recycling value chain in India, increasing recycling of used beverage cartons from 30 percent in 2018 to 60 percent by 2025. Chaired by Ashutosh Manohar, Managing Director, Tetra Pak South Asia, the AARC’s 16 member industry leaders represent the juice, dairy, pharma, liquor and packaging industries who will pool resources and collaborate with waste pickers, scrap dealers, waste management companies, recyclers and NGOs.
